Intelligence and Being Smart

What is intelligence? What does it mean to be smart? AI “super-intelligence” is a label that is applied to AI that is “smarter” and better than humans at doing the thing (whatever the thing is that superintelligence is applied to).

A calculator can do a math function way faster and more accurately than a human. Does that mean that a calculator is more intelligent than humans? Is it smarter than humans? The vast majority of people won’t say that a calculator is super-intelligent or smarter than humans, but it is faster at calculating numbers than humans. It is merely a tool.

Conversely, just because an AI is faster and better than humans at a certain task, that doesn’t mean that it is super-intelligent either. As such, AI is a tool in this sense.
