Intelligence is a Human Quality

According to old definitions of the word intelligence, like in the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary, it indicates that intelligence is a human attribute with a core meaning of understanding (see webstersdictionary1828.com). An LLM does not understand the question nor the answer — it does probability math on the words in the question to get a likely answer (it is more complicated than that, but that explanation will suffice for this discussion).

Because of that, AI/LLMs should not be described as intelligent. It is a misnomer to say so because we are attributing a human attribute to a computer. This would be like saying that humans can have the divine attribute of omniscience (knowing everything) when it should be a term applied only to God.
